There’s nothing quite like spring in Hattiesburg, and for Golden Eagles fans, that means one thing — Southern Miss baseball at Pete Taylor Park. The Pete is one of the best college baseball atmospheres in the country, but if you’re heading to a weekend series, you need to be prepared for unpredictable Mississippi weather and strict stadium policies.
Whether you’re chilling in the Right Field Roost or grabbing a seat behind home plate, here’s your guide to dressing for The Pete.
1. Master the Layering Game
Spring baseball in Hattiesburg is notoriously fickle. A 1:00 PM Saturday first pitch might be a blazing 85 degrees with high humidity. A 6:00 PM Friday night game in February can drop into the low 40s by the fifth inning.
The rule: always layer. A lightweight, breathable tee is your baseline. Bring a premium hoodie or an elevated quarter-zip that you can tie around your waist or throw over your shoulders when the sun drops behind the grandstands.
Pro tip: avoid heavy, stiff bookstore hoodies. Reach for premium, tailored fleece — looks sharp, keeps the chill out, doesn’t add bulk you’ll regret in the seventh.
2. Keep the Sun Off — The Right Way
Pete Taylor Park is beautiful, but the sun beats down relentlessly on the bleachers during afternoon games. A hat is mandatory.
You don’t have to settle for the generic foam truckers or stiff oversized snapbacks from the campus bookstore. Upgrade with a structured rope hat or a clean minimalist dad cap. The Stay Golden Trucker keeps the sun out of your eyes while elevating the whole fit.
3. The Clear Bag Policy Is Real
If you’re bringing a bag into The Pete, it has to comply with the university’s clear bag policy.
- Bags must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC, and cannot exceed 12″ × 6″ × 12″.
- One-gallon clear freezer bags are allowed.
- Small clutch purses (no larger than 4.5″ × 6.5″) are permitted, with or without a handle.
Don’t be the person who has to walk all the way back to the parking garage because they brought an oversized backpack. Check policy before you leave the house — official Southern Miss policy here.
4. Pack the Essentials
Quick checklist before you head out:
- Sunglasses — afternoon games hit hard from the third base side
- Sunscreen — reapplies aren’t allowed at the gate, put it on before
- Refillable bottle (empty at the gate, fill at the fountain)
- Layer (hoodie or quarter-zip) — even if it’s hot at first pitch
- Cash — concession lines move faster with cash
- The bag check above
5. Skip the Fast-Fashion Fan Gear
You know the look — stiff, itchy, boxy tees with cracked screen-printing that fade after two washes. You’re a die-hard fan, but you don’t have to dress like a walking billboard.
The Golden Standard exists for the opposite. Our gear is designed in Hattiesburg for fans who want premium, vintage-inspired Southern Miss apparel they can actually wear out to dinner after the game without looking like they just stepped out of a campus gift shop.
From ultra-soft vintage-wash tees to clean embroidered hats, we build apparel that looks and feels like a classic from day one.
